These guys are standing in shallow water at low tide on a foggy, overcast morning. Breakfast is probably over and now it is time to rest. Not a bad idea!

Green Heron (click to enlarge)

This morning a Green Heron was fishing for breakfast in the mangroves a short distance from my dock. They are year around residents here and a pair usually nest nearby. They are the only heron that actually fishes, that is, they will drop bait in the water to attract small fish. The bird will use small pieces of fish, worms, twigs, etc. to lure their prey within range.

My favorite, the Green Heron is the smallest and most secretive of the North American herons. Their unique squawk always warns me when they are near.
