Coconuts: Florida’s Tree

Coconuts (click to emlarge)

To me no other tree symbolizes southern Florida like the Coconut Palm. The palm grows throughout the tropics. The entire tree is used by various cultures for food, timber, thatching, etc.

Recently, the early morning sun was reflecting from the canal on to a small cluster of coconuts. The quality of the lighting was perfect and I was able to take the above image along with several others. A curious “bushy-tailed tree rat” was watching me photograph the nuts.

The Road to Key West

The Overseas Highway, US 1, also known as the road to Key West is one of the most scenic drives in the country. Everyone is in such to hurry to get to or from Key West that they often overlook some of the prettiest scenery anywhere. The highway was completed in 1938 and essentially replaced the Florida East Coast Railway in the Keys when is was destroyed by the 1935 hurricane

The highway is 110 miles long and travels over forty-two bridges ending in Key West.
