Today’s Photo – An Early Sunset Treat
Out for a late afternoon boat ride on recent breezy, even blustery, day. A few large clouds were skittering by so low it would seem you could almost touch them. This quick shot was taken with my iPhone. Then it was over, the rain started and we ran for home.

Saint James City Sunrise
I am normally not much of a morning person. But recently, peering out the bedroom a few minutes before sunrise, I notice a few clouds hanging out on the eastern horizon. “This may be something special.” I say to myself. “Do you want to make the effort?” I did and it was well worth it. Saint James City Sunrise is the result of five bracketed shots processed in Photomatix Pro and re-imported into Lightroom for a little final tweaking. By compositing five bracketed exposures the resulting image has a greater dynamic range between the lightest and darkest areas than would otherwise be possible. And because of the dynamic range increase, the final image is often more dramatic.
Please let me know what you think.

Hunger Games – District 12 Location Photos
Hunger Games, the blockbuster movie, based on the novel by Suzanne Collins, was filmed entirely in Western North Carolina. The story takes place in the apocalyptic future after the destruction of North America, in a nation known as Panem. This new nation consists of the wealthy capital, Capitol, and twelve surrounding, poorer districts.
District 12, where the tale begins, is located in what had been known as Appalachia. The District 12 scenes were filmed in the ghost town that was once the Henry River Mill Village near Hildebrand, NC. Built in the early years of the 20th century, this self contained community consisted of a hydro powered textile mill, dam, general store, fire protection, and workers’ cottages.
It was those cottages I hoped to photograph. On a road trip through Western North Carolina mountains recently, while trying to escape the 100-plus degree temperatures, we decided to look for the site. To our surprise, the rather idyllic area was easy to find and very accessible. Using a wide angle lens, I spent about thirty minutes making the photos below and we were on our way again. In case you are interested, the entire 1500 acres are for sale for a reported 1.4 million.
For you photographers, each HDR image was created from five bracketed, hand held shots, then processed in Photomatix Pro, imported into Lightroom 4 and tweaked with minor additional adjustments.

The Orange Robe
There are some thirty-four active Buddhist Temples or Wats and an estimated 2,000 monks in and around Luang Prabang, Laos. Boys as young a ten years old can enter a temple to receive religious training as well as a general education. A Monk’s day starts very early, usually around 4:00AM, with prayer and meditation in preparation for their alms gathering. Several hundred Monks walk barefooted through the streets of Luang Prabang at first light gathering alms from the faithful, a very solemn ritual that has occurred daily for over seven hundred years. The Monks then return to their Wats for their main meal of the day and then retire to their quarters in the afternoon for meditation and rest.
When one wanders around the temples in the afternoon, they appear deserted. A quiet serenity settles over the temple grounds. This is especially so in the more rural Wats where the only sounds are birds singing and bamboo rustling in the breeze. But there is a subtle indication that the monks are there: the ubiquitous orange robe. One is neatly folded across a window sill, a freshly laundered robe is drying on bamboo, or several are on a makeshift clothesline.

Sunset
Sunset is an angel weeping
Holding out a bloody sword
No matter how I squint I cannot
Make out what it’s pointing toward
Sometimes you feel like you live too long
Days drip slowly on the page
You catch yourself
Pacing the cage
Pacing the Cage ~ Jimmy Buffett
Surely, sunset is God’s daily gift to us. Many places boast about their sunsets but Pine Island sunsets are as good as they get. On many an evening, the thunderheads that have formed over the Everglades from the afternoon heat are pushed west by the trade winds and position themselves perfectly to reflect the sun’s last rays over the Gulf of Mexico. The result is an explosion of reds, oranges and vermilion, along with the bruised purple of the remnants of the thunderstorms. You owe it to yourself and a loved one to stop and enjoy and perhaps toast God’s gift.
