Bahia Honda Bridge

The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge is a scenic bridge in the lower Florida Keys connecting Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key. Originally part of the Overseas Railway, the State of Florida purchased it after the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane and converted it to automobile use as part of the Overseas Highway in 1938.

Key West

Key West

Key West, as much a state of mind as an address. Earnest Hemingway and Jimmy Buffet come are two notable previous residents. Harry Truman, John James Audubon and Tennessee Williams also spent time in the Conch Republic.

The Tropic

The Trpoic Theater, Key West

Fircely independent and only ninety miles from Cuba, Key West declared its independence as recently as 1982.

Sloppy Joe’s, Hog’s Breath Saloon and The Green Parrot are icons in the town. Eccentric, funky, colorful and relaxing all describe this island; which seems more Caribbean than Floridian.

A few weeks ago I put up a post about The Road to Key West along with a photo gallery of with a lot of colorful images along the way to the Conch Republic.

Everyone is in such to hurry to get to or from Key West that they often overlook some of the prettiest scenery anywhere. The highway was completed in 1938 and essentially replaced the Florida East Coast Railway in the Keys when is was destroyed by the 1935 hurricane
