Shrimp Boats and Their Names

Shrimp Boats and Their Names

Miss Evelyn, Shrimp Boat

Bubba was my best good friend. And even I know that ain’t something you can find just around the corner. Bubba was gonna be a shrimpin’ boat captain, but instead he died right there by that river in Vietnam…..Forrest Gump

Boat naming is an interesting exercise. And one I have not indulged in. Well, that isn’t exactly accurate. Our boat is named “Eventually”,  but we haven’t gotten around to making it official by actually having her name applied to her stern. Pleasure boat names such as “Serenity,” “Island Time,” or “No Worries” tend to describe an idealized boating lifestyle. It seems clear that most boat owners named their craft before the reality of boat maintenance and upkeep struck. Shrimp boats, on the other hand, are often named after real or imagined women or are descriptive of rugged, hardworking life of the boat and her owner. “Always Something” or “Fools Folly.” comes to mind. What is the name of the shrimp boat in the movie “Forrest Gump?”

Recently, while shooting images of some of the Fort Myers, FL, shrimp boat fleet I got to thinking about boat names and the the importance the boat owners/captains must put into the process. Here are a few images depicting some of the shrimp boat names.

  1. Neat post, beautifully composed photos, I especially like the first one 🙂

    1. Thanks. The first one is my favorite too. Sorry for being so slow, but we have been out of town collecting more shrimp boat images.

  2. Beautiful boats. That old ‘Jenna Dawn’ looks like a hard working boat, which reminds me that Forrest’s boat was named after his childhood sweetheart, Jenny. I really must watch that movie again. 😉

    1. It is a hard life for the shrimpers as well as the boats. Thank you for your visits. They are appreciated.

  3. those are some awesome photos, thanks for sharing
