Visiting local markets is near the top of my list of things to do when traveling. One can learn so much about a country’s culture and customs just by wandering through the local market. Life’s necessities are all on display. Food, clothing, housewares, tools. You name it; it’s all there. The sights, sounds, smells, and colors are memorable.
There is a “wet market” in a small town deep in the Mekong River Delta in Vietnam. The usual array of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with exotic meats and seafood that make their cuisine so intoxicatingly delicious, are displayed.
All of the other stuff of life is there too. Piled high and oh so colorful. It seems to me that many of us Westerners haven’t learned the fine art of enjoying being surrounded by bold, bright, happy colors. Nope, we seem to be stuck with khaki, olive, or the occasional muted pastel. Our loss I think. What about you?

15 Oct 2012Interesting that your first photo is of women’s bras. And yet you try to ignore that by talking about fresh fruits and vegetables, exotic meats and seafood. We know what you’re doing- trying to distract us from our base instincts while pandering to them. But for my part, I’d rather have the food shots. I’m about ready for lunch

16 Oct 2012you are so right! i wonder what it would take to jump start our culture into embracing color?! a good place to start would be with the paint and home decor merchants to set grand splashes of colors for the new seasons. hmmm. wonder how one could start that domino effect? ‘go ethnic?’ no, because they’d go to the earth colors with black theme….
incubation has begun!

24 Oct 2012i thought of your post today when someone told me of a town in the andes where most of the structures are white.. i was silently disappointed that they weren’t brightly colored. they can’t lose their culture in order to do what the jones are doing in other countries!
