Of Entrances and Exits – What’s Behind the Green Door?

Affairs are easier of entrance than of exit; and it is but common prudence to see our way out before we venture in….Aesop

Entrance, Kolkata, India

The stairs, the shaft of light, and the shuttered green door all caught my eye. What’s behind the Green Door? What’s at the top of the stairs?

Kolkata, India is a city time left behind. Little has changed since the British Raj left in 1947. Architecturally, the city was a showplace, but has since fallen into disrepair. Many of the grand old “palaces,” their term, are owned by the descendants of the wealthy residents who now lack the finances or desire to maintain these grand old places. This photo was taken in one such place. We were there at the owners invitation to witness the family’s Durga Puja celebration in the main hall. Off in one corner of the hall were stairs leading, I suppose, to the families living quarters. The colors, shapes, and the light from above compelled me to make this image.
