Habana Vieja – Where Time Stood Still

Habana Vieja – Where Time Stood Still

Much of Havana looks as it did in the late 1950’s. Standing on a street corner in Old Havana is like stepping into a time warp. The ubiquitous Yank Tanks, some of Detroit’s finest, from the decade of the fifties, ply the narrow streets of this architecturally beautiful and culturally rich city.

Those Fords, Chevies, Plymouths, Pontiacs, and yes, even the rare Studebaker continually lumber along the Malecon and through the barrios of this tropical city.

These American turned Cuban cars are kept running because of their owner’s repair skills and inventiveness.

  1. The pic on the Malecón looks like a real ad…It is so beautiful!!!!!

    1. I was trying to evoke the feeling of being there in the 50s with the way I processed the images, so your comment is much appreciated. Thanks.

  2. I was thinking the same thing as Ilargia! Great post Ron!

  3. Incredible shots, although I’ve never been your photos make me feel like I am well acquainted with the place. Love the use of B&W, brings out the texture and emotions underneath. Great post.

    1. Thanks Randall. I continue to waffle between B&W and color, but for this post I wanted to evoke the feeling of time having stood still and B&W was the obvious choice.

      1. Agree, the emotions of the two are strong in good photography, and so different. When the mood calls for a B&W and the photographer chooses B&W (as you did), it makes for an amazing set of images.

  4. I love the pictures, especially the one with the waves crashing against the wall. I want to be there right now!

    1. You should go. 🙂 thank you for your kind comment.

  5. I love this black and white gallery of Cuba, Ron. It really captures that stuck-in-time feeling.

    1. Thank you Cathy. You confirmed what I was trying for.

  6. All images look like they are straight out from a classic bond movie.

  7. Superb, Ron… Love the ‘old’ cars… 😀

    1. Thanks Bams. It is amazing how they keep them running.

  8. Those cars take me back QUITE a few years! My parents had a very similar Plymouth which they seemed to expect could last forever.

    1. Takes me back too. My first cart was a ’55 Mercury. Thanks for stopping by.

  9. What wonderful old cars, Ron. They look so great in you B&W pics. I definitely have to get to Cuba one of these days. 🙂

  10. Fantastic series and Yank Tank 5 is superb.

    1. Thank you Lynne. There are so many scenes like that around Havana. Their tenacity is amazing.
