Express Thyself

Medieval Days

Recently, my band of especially cheery men and I, found ourselves on the Devil’s Causeway, traversing the very large and dangerous Sherwood Forest on our way to Nottingham. We had not been there for some time and thought it ripe for pillaging. Now,  late in the day, my men are tired and thirsty. The roadway is becoming more crowded with peasants, dragging their children and livestock along, heading for the small village of Little Wenham just ahead. As we near, I send Friar Tuck to the Abbey to get the latest on the Crusades that have been going on for years in the south. He has precious little time to spend with his cloaked cohorts, and I knew he was looking forward to sampling their new vintage. Little John caught a glimpse of the tents and flags at the jousting arena, tipped his hat to me and was gone. I would not see him till the morn, battered and bruised for sure, with a smile on his face. The weekly market was in full swing. Bursting with music and laughter, and smelling of wood smoke and game roasting and sweat. Everyone, it seems, was there. Minstrels and maidens, moneychangers and tradesmen, jugglers and jesters. And wenches. As for the rest of us, we elbowed our way into the nearest ale house. Day becomes night, and the revelry continues, but my memories become foggy. I may recall in the wee hours though, a tumble in the hay. And then suddenly, and with a jolt, I am awake.
