On a quiet, early morning Habana Veja (Old Havana) street, a fruit vendor readies his cart for the day. The shelves of the government-run stores are often woefully empty. Enterprising individuals are filling the gap by selling fresh fruits and vegetable in local neighborhoods and in temporary markets giving rise to a tentative but promising free market system.
