Southern Magnolia – One Bloom Three Ways

Southern Magnolia

Southern Magnolia

The magnolias are still blooming around here and what a joy they are. When fully open they are the size of small dinner plates and they are happy to share their delicate sweet fragrance with anyone passing under the tree.

They are a joy for me to photograph. This morning’s session with a single bloom yielded about two dozen lovely images. I thought I would share three, each processed differently. They were shot in my studio bathed in morning light streaming through the East window. By placing the bloom at an angle to the light I was able to get a nice shadow play.

The first image is in color and somewhat underexposed to contrast the warm white petals against the dark, waxy green leaves. The middle image is black and white. I like the way the roundness of the petals is emphasized. The last one was processed using several filters in On 1’s Perfect Photo Effects to add a little texture and softness and a painterly feeling.

Which one do you like the best?
