Recently, while in Prague, Czech Republic, we would pass a local pub at least twice a day, as we came and went. Most of the time there was an interesting cast of characters lingering in the doorways. Too tempting for the photographer in me to pass up. Now, I won’t bore you with all of them but will share a few.
Czechs take their beer and beer drinking very seriously. Some more than others. You will see the same guy in four of the photographs, all taken on different days.
Ask anyone and they will boastfully tell you Czechs drink more beer per capita than anywhere else. And with good reason. Urquell, the national beer, is excellent. Oh yea, it costs about the same as a bottle of water. A no brainer.
And their distribution system is without equal. No messing around with bottles or kegs. They just pump it straight into the tanks under the bar.

16 Oct 2016Costs the same as a bottle of water? No fair! We Americans have to pay $5-7 for good solid beers (I’m cheap and wait for a $3.50 happy hour), but that’s several bottles of water. I love these pics. I have been a regular at several bars in the past, and it’s as much about the camaraderie of the gathering place as the beer. Although a frosty one is great. Is it served cold there or room temp?

17 Oct 2016Not fair, I agree. I think it comes down to taxes. The US taxes alcohol at higher rates than most. Plus what we get is way inferior to Urquell. Yes, it is served ice cold and often in a frosted mug. Why would anyone buy water? 🙂

3 Nov 2018We too in the UK pay too much for beer as far as I’m concerned. That along with a few other reasons have lead to the demise of a lot of English pubs I’m sad to say. Nice set of images by the way – no. 4 is my favourite.
