On a recent bright sunny morning, I spent some time walking around the downtown area of Sarasota, Florida, my new hometown. I like shooting landscapes and especially architecture with a wide angle lens and processing the images as B&W. Shapes, textures, and contrast are what I look for and my morning walkabout did not disappoint. While Sarasota is not a particularly interesting city architecturally I found plenty of interesting compositions.
“Seeing in black and white” or visualizing an image without the distraction of color completely changes the photographic opportunities. Now you are looking at line, shape, texture, form, etc. Now those harsh shadows are your friend; they are defining and shaping the image.
Post processing your photos in Lightroom or Photoshop unleashes a myriad of creative possibilities.
To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.
