Interesting structures, abstract images, especially in unexpected objects or places, inspire the photographer in me. I like bold, simple shapes. Geometric forms, lines, and angles get my attention. Add texture and overlay strong shadows and I’m hooked.
Imagine my glee when I had the opportunity to photograph a defunct blast furnace. Several acres of tanks and pipes, pulleys and gears, thousands of rivets marching along meandering dotted lines, and rust. Willy Wonka gone nuts. On my first visit, the bright, milk-white sky allowed for beautiful, almost shadowless images. Great portraits of furnaces and boilers, pipes and cables.
But I wanted more. In my mind’s eye, I was seeing grittier images with texture and strong shadowplay. My vision was realized during my next visit. A bright, sunny winter’s day. The harsh light enabled me to show the heart and bones of this old furnace. From tight abstract shots to longer views, her character and grittiness show through.
