What a treat! A flock of about twenty White Pelicans paid a visit to our little pond behind the house earlier this week. These pelicans winter in SW Florida and are a fairly common sight along our coastal waterways. But they usually don’t venture this far inland.
These guys are BIG. About three times the size of our native Brown Pelicans. They have a wingspan of up to twelve feet and can weigh over twenty pounds.
Hooded Mergansers, smallish diving ducks, have been wintering on our pond for about a month now. They stay busy diving for the little fish that inhabit the pond and chasing each other around.
The White Ibis can be counted on to show up every day. They are a local, year-round resident.
