Nautilus, conch, sand dollar, starfish, sea urchin are just a few of the shells my wife has collected during our many hours and miles spent along the shore. From Bali to Portugal with many stops in between. But “Shells” is more than just a collection of exoskeletons washed up upon a beach. It can also be thought of as an accumulation of the detritus of life. Those mundane objects: eyeglasses, a key, a pitcher, a few coins, a book, or two. All valued objects of a life well lived with miles of beaches still to explore.
“Shells” is a recent addition to the collection of still life photographs I have been making in my garage-photo studio during this unending COVID induced quarantine. My inspiration comes from the Dutch master painters of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Their use of color and how they “paint light” are breathtaking. I try to mix that inspiration with equal parts of creativity and perhaps a dash of sense of humor.
