“Sliced Tomatoes,” a high key still life photograph (or, at least, tending toward a high key image), is quite a departure from my usual images. The tones are bright, the colors are generally light rather than saturated. And there is just enough shadow to bring out the shape of the knife and tomatoes. As with all photography, it’s all about the light. Here, I wanted the light high and slightly to the left to highlight the blade of the knife. And the freshness of the sliced tomatoes. The light was also bounced back into the shadow side of the tomatoes to highlight their roundness. This was accomplished by placing a reflective aluminum cookie sheet just to the right of the camera.
