Asparagus – Two Ways

Asparagus two ways

Why photograph asparagus you may ask. Good question. Because I could?

Actually, I was challenging myself to come up with an engaging image of a bunch of these spindly veggies. The tops, of course, are the only part that is visually interesting. I placed a few stalks in a shallow wooden tray, turning some this way and that. To add a little interest I added a subtle spot or snoot flash with a greenish gel to highlight the otherwise dark background. Finally, a little post-processing in Lightroom to add a little contrast.

The resulting image is more interesting than I had initially imagined. Always a nice surprise. The asparagus tips certainly have an organic look but also have an almost reptilian semblance.

Occasionally, I think a still-life image I’ve been editing may good and a black and white. This image may actually look better in monochrome. What do you think?
