Urban Pond

Lilly Pads

Recently, on my morning walk, I passed a rather unattractive urban pond whose sides were oozing with gelatinous algae. Not very inviting. But something in the far corner caught my eye. A small cluster of Lilly pads was in bloom among the algae. As I walked toward them the din of morning traffic quieted. As I made a few photos my mind wandered. I seemed to remember an album I once had, Basho’s Pond, though I can not recall the artists. Basho’s Pond. Surely Basho had contemplated a pond in his many writings. Of course! His most famous haiku:

The old pond

A frog leaps in.

Sound of the water.

Beauty can be found almost anywhere.
