Inhale deeply. Can you smell the wonderful aromas in this imagined kitchen in sun-drenched Tuscany, or the south of France, or perhaps Portugal? Thyme, oregano, savory sage, dill, basil, marjoram, and more dry on the line stretched across the kitchen. Fresh heirloom tomatoes, shallots, garlic, chilies, and of course, olive oil wait on the counter. And there’s the mortar and pestle to grind and blend the spices together. So what should we make/ A red sauce for pasta I’m thinking. Sound good to you?
Herbs and Spices” is another in the series of still life photographs I have been making in my garage-studio during this unending COVID induced quarantine. My inspiration comes from the Dutch master painters of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Their use of color and how they “paint light” are breathtaking. I try to mix that inspiration with equal parts of my creativity and perhaps a dash of sense of humor.
