India never ceases to leave me in wonder. The diversity and devotion and spirituality. Take for example the Baul sect of ascetics that roam the Bengal area of Eastern India and portions of Bangladesh. These homeless wanderers share their spirituality through song and music, surviving on alms, gifts of food and money from those they encounter. Their beliefs of simplicity in life and love are beautifully sung, possibly accompanied by an ektara, a one-stringed “plucked drum” drone instrument, carved from a gourd, and made of bamboo and goatskin.
