Sanibel Island Light and Boca Grande Lighthouse stand as sentinels for Pine Island Sound

Two historic lighthouses keep watch over the entrances to Pine Island Sound in Southwest Florida.

The Sanibel Island Light or Point Ybel Light was one of the first lighthouses on Florida’s Gulf Coast. It was first lit in August 1884 and watches over southern Pine Island Sound. Sanibel Island is famous for being a shell collectors paradise.

Known originally as the Gasparilla Island Light Station, the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse was first lit in 1890. It sits on the southern tip of Gasparilla Island at Boca Grande Pass, the entrance to Charlotte Harbor and northern Pine Island Sound.
