Still Life with Wooden Chest and Onion
Recently, I noticed an onion trying to sprout from the darkness of the pantry. Tenacious, I thought, and deserving of a chance. Suspended in a right-sized vase on the kitchen counter, the bulb’s roots dangling in water. Almost immediately its pale green scallion-like leaves darkened, leaned toward to window light, and grew. And grew. To over a foot in length and bent over double. Portrait worthy, I thought.
