Along the Malabar Coast, Silhouettes of the Past

Along the Malabar Coast, Silhouettes of the Past

Like winged creatures from the past, silhouetted against the evening dusk, the fish nets stand watch over the backwaters of Kochi, in southern India. Thought to have been introduced by Chinese explorers during the rein of Kubla Khan, in the late fourteenth century, these kinetic sculptures are made from teak wood and bamboo. The nets, counterbalanced by huge stones, dip Into the water when two fishermen run up the long poles. As the men retreat, the hammock-like net rises and the fish, if any, are harvested.

The photo was processed with the Perfect Effects 8 plugin and a final tweak in Lightroom. The original image can be seen in an earlier post here.

  1. Aren’t they spectacular? And that creaking, as they draw the ropes … I just loved them, especially in that golden light – just as I remember them, Ron 🙂

    1. Indeed. They sound as old as they are. I read that there are fewer and fewer. Too expensive to maintain.

  2. These are fabulous structures. I’ve never seen them or even heard of them. Thanks for the wonderful picture of them silhouetted during the golden light.
