Bird Portriats

Bird Portriats

When we think of photographing birds we usually think of color. And why not. Birds are, in fact, colorful creatures and their environment is often quite exotic as well. Before the advent of color film, all photography was black and white. I dare say most of the greatest photographs ever made were in black and white.

So, why not monochrome bird portraits? Black and white images tend to simplify the scene. Removing color renders objects as shapes and reduces the busyness color often created in scenes.  We tend to focus more on texture, shape, and form. Characteristics all creatures have, including birds. Perhaps a monochrome bird portrait gives us a little more insight into the creatures we are so fond of watching and photographing.

Now, I don’t expect many to agree with me here, but I believe black and white is a valid form of photography for almost any subject, and birds are no exception. What do you think?
