The Angels of Bonaventure Point the Way Up

The Angels of Bonaventure Point the Way Up

I love to take my time visiting and photographing old graveyards. The residents usually don’t mind. The statuary is beautiful and their symbolism fascinating. Take the angels pictured here, for example. The first two live in Bonaventure Cemetery near Savannah, Georgia, and the third, in a long forgotten graveyard in north central Florida.

The Angles of Bonaventure

The Angles of Bonaventure

Angels are messengers from God. With a single finger pointing up they are leading the departed’s soul toward heaven. Their wings are symbols of the higher realms of existence, ascension and spiritual mobility. In the first picture, the angel is holding a sword conveying protection. The last angel is holding a cross, the symbol of Christianity suggesting the suffering and sacrifice of Christ.

  1. You’re right – cemeteries are great locations, aren’t they? I used to love them in the winter, when I lived in Canada, though the ‘live oak and Spanish moss’ backgrounds from Florida look pretty special too! Lovely shots 🙂

    1. Thanks. Not many cemeteries in Sri Lanka, but oh my, the beautiful ancient temples.

  2. I love these photos and the way you have softened the edges and making them black and white adds a spiritual element to them

    1. Thank you Lily, for your kind comment.

  3. Beautiful sculptures of angels…and such wonderful photos too!

    1. Thank you and thanks for stopping by.

  4. The Morgan angle first angle you are showing , is holding an anchor, as the Morgan family was a shiping magnate!
