“Still Life with Wine and Grapes” is a recent addition to my growing Still Life Portfolio. The setting is unique in that it is a composition consisting of relatively few elements placed in a niche-like setting with a dark background. This rather simple setting contrasts with the lush, exuberant opulence of most of my other configurations, which are reminiscent of the Dutch Golden Age (17th Century) still lifes.
Juan Sánchez Cotán, to whom I pay tribute to with this image, was a Spanish Baroque painter, active in the early 17th century. His paintings were meticulously rendered images of simple, commonplace objects set in a dark cupboard like setting. Strong lighting sweeping over the still life creates a strong contrast of light and shade. Cotan’s austere paintings may have been predictive. In 1603 he gave up his lucrative painting career to join the Carthusian order as a lay brother.

23 Feb 2020Dear Ron,
totally different to the classic 17th c. still lives – except the grapes. A quite empty framed universe whereas the basic idea of a still life was showing a full and open universe reflecting the power of the Dutch.
Thanks for sharing
